MUW’s December Graduates’ Recognition Ceremony set for Dec. 7

By Jill D. O’Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women will hold its second annual December Graduates’ Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. in Rent Auditorium of Whitfield Hall.

Students who participate will receive a long-stemmed red rose and a certificate of participation. Diplomas will be mailed to the students after grades are final.

MUW President Claudia A. Limbert said she began a similar ceremony at Penn State University DuBois where she served as campus executive officer before coming to MUW in 2002. She said she felt a similar ceremony at MUW would be well received.

“Students are graduating then and need to move away for jobs, graduate school, etc.,” Limbert said. “They want and need some sense of closure.

“They can come back in May to officially ‘walk’ if they so desire although quite a few either couldn’t make it back for the May ceremony or had found they enjoyed the December ceremony so much that they didn’t feel the need to attend the May ceremony too.”

Participants who wish to do so will have the opportunity to thank those who were particularly helpful during their college years. Those students will be limited to one minute at the microphone.

“It was a very moving experience,” Limbert said, referring to last year’s ceremony. “I know that there often wasn’t a dry eye in the house as students took the opportunity to speak from their hearts and thank those who helped them persevere. I felt very good about it, and I think that those who took part in it felt the same way.”

Dr. Marty Hatton, associate professor and coordinator of the communication program at MUW, will be the keynote speaker. A faculty member at MUW since 1992, he was voted the 2004 Faculty Member of the Year.

Hatton earned his bachelor’s degree from MUW and his master’s and doctorate from the University of Alabama.

A reception will follow in the Whitfield Hall lobby.
