MUW student enjoying study abroad experience

By Jill D. O’Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mary Kathryn Kirkpatrick, one of four Mississippi University for Women students studying abroad this semester, is enjoying her experience at Huron University in London and the opportunity to enjoy different cultures.

Kirkpatrick, a senior communication major from Amory, is enrolled in contemporary literature in London, arts in London and politics of the Third World.

“I have always wanted to study abroad because I love to travel and meet new people,” she said. “I also enjoy changes, and London has been a definite lifestyle change for me.”

She also is doing an internship with a public relations firm in London that handles fashion designers. She works on displays at the firm’s showrooms and writes press releases about different fashion trends.

Kirkpatrick said traveling has been her favorite part of the experience.

“I have been able to do a good bit of traveling around Europe since arriving in London, and that has been one of my favorite things about the experience, but I really enjoy London,” she said. “It is very diverse with people from all around the world, and living here has enabled me to meet new people and experience different cultures.”

Her study abroad experience has exceeded her expectations, she said, and she hopes other students will pursue a study abroad experience.

“I would certainly recommend study abroad to other students,” Kirkpatrick said. “Nothing can compare with the new and different experiences it provides for students. It is amazing to study Picasso or Monet, and instead of looking at paintings in a book, actually being able to go to a museum and see the original work.

“I also feel that studying abroad gives students a global perspective of the United States which is very eye-opening.”

Three other MUW students are studying abroad this semester. Jessie Powers, a sophomore from Columbus, also is studying at Huron University. Leah Peacock, a junior from Southaven, is studying at Aichi Shukutoku University near Nagoya, Japan, and Sarah Sheffield, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., is attending The Abbey in Pontlevoy, France.

Dr. Eric Daffron, coordinator of study abroad programs, said four more students will be studying abroad next semester.

“By all accounts, Mary Kathryn is having the time of her life, exploring the world and becoming a more culturally savvy person.”

She agreed, “I think studying abroad has changed my views on many issues and given me a much more open mind, which I think will benefit me in the future.”

Kirkpatrick said she plans to attend law school next fall.
