By Jill D. O’Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Ellen Thompson Black, an attorney at Gholson, Hicks and Nichols in Columbus, will give the keynote address at Mississippi University for Women’s Senior Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1 p.m., in Rent Auditorium of Whitfield Hall.

“Senior Convocation is an opportunity for us to gather together to celebrate our seniors and their accomplishments,” said Dr. Bucky Wesley, vice president for student services. “I think our students will enjoying hearing from Ms. Black because she is a successful, young alum.”

A 1999 summa cum laude graduate of MUW, Black is originally from Jackson, Tenn. She earned her law degree from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2002.

While earning a bachelor of arts in English at MUW, she was very active on campus. She was a Student Government Association senator and a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Lockheart Social Club.

Black also was elected Miss MUW and included in MUW’s Hall of Fame her senior year. Her other W awards were SGA Senator of the Year and Philosophy Award for Outstanding Student.

“I am truly excited and honored to speak at the MUW Senior Convocation where I once sat in the audience as a senior and wondered what the future held for me,” she said.

As an associate at Gholson, Hicks and Nichols since March 2003, her areas of practice are medical malpractice defense, insurance defense, wills and trust.

A recipient of the Excellence for the Future Award in Legal Practice, Black is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the Mississippi Defense Lawyer’s Association, the Lowndes County and American Bar Association, Phi Delta Phi and Texas Law Review Articles Editor.
