O’Bryant COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women will hold its annual Welty Weekend at The W Oct. 14-16. Held in honor of the late Eudora Welty, the weekend promises to be a great one. Welty, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973, attended MUW from 1925 to 1927. She was the first to receive an honorary doctorate from MUW in 1998. The weekend will kickoff on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with the 16th annual Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium. Daniel Wallace, author of “Big Fish,” “Ray in Reverse,” “The Watermelon King,” and numerous works in “Story,” “Glimmer Train,” “Prairie Schooner” and “Shenandoah,” is the opening speaker. In addition, the Welty Prize winner will be announced, and there will be a reception and showing of two-dimensional works by the late artist Lois Wilson and book signing by all Symposium authors in the Shattuck Hall Art Gallery. Held in Poindexter Auditorium, the Welty Symposium is free and open to the public. The theme is “‘What might be out of sight...’: Focusing the Image, Composing the Scene, and Directing the Eye in Southern Literature.” The symposium will continue Friday morning with presentations by Isabel Zuber, Ann Fisher-Wirth, Josh Russell and Pamela Duncan. Authors Joe Lee, Ace Atkins and Tim Parrish will follow in the afternoon session. The Welty Gala will be held Friday evening at 7 with Bill Bradley as the keynote speaker. Bradley is a NBA Hall of Fame member, a former U.S. senator and author of “Time Present, Time Past,” “Values of the Game” and “The Journey From Here.” The Gala will be held in MUW’s Hogarth Banquet Room, and tickets are required. Proceeds from the Welty Gala benefit MUW’s Eudora Welty Chair in Humanities. Presenting during the concluding session of the Welty Symposium on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 16 are Lynn York, Martha Ward and John Bensko.
