development opportunities to teachers
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women is expected to
receive more than $1 million from the Mississippi Department of
Education over the next three years to offer professional development
opportunities to seventh and eighth grade mathematics and science
teachers.
MUW and the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will partner
with 10 schools districts located in the Mississippi Delta to offer the
Creative Higher Achievements in Mathematics, Problem-solving, and
Science (CHAMPS II) program, which will provide professional development
through the following activities: CHAMPS II Summer Institutes, Super
Saturdays Mini-Conferences, classroom follow-up activities, mentoring
experiences and WebCT and project website availability.
The goals and objectives for Champs II include delivery of content-based
professional development in science and mathematics, preparing teachers
to determine students’ learning gaps and to provide instruction to
address these gaps, enhancement of student achievement in mathematics
and science in the classroom of teachers participating in CHAMPS II and
providing teachers with an opportunity to enroll in either a three hour
mathematics or science course in order to meet new state certification
requirements.
Dr. Suzanne Bean, director of graduate studies and coordinator of the
graduate program in education said, “We are so excited to be able to
offer high-quality professional development opportunities to seventh and
eighth grade mathematics and science teachers. As a result, we expect
changes in teacher satisfaction, teaching strategies and improvement in
student achievement.”

Institutes will be held in July. Contingent upon funding availability,
