MUW business students take part in New York field
trip
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women business students had
the opportunity to visit New York City during an educational trip over
spring break. The trip was sponsored in part by the MUW TVA Investment
Club and the national business academic organization Phi Beta Lambda. In
order to make the trip possible, the students from both organizations
participated in three fundraisers.
The following students participated in the trip: Neda Powell, Alicia
Smith, Chance Fortenberry, Jessica Johnson, Kimberly Pierce, Ashley
Gandy, Kelly Honsinger, Rebecca Hegler, Monique Jenkins, Hazel Brooks,
Jason Walker, Meagan Vaughn, Dana Hill, Jessie Powers and Tam Gray.
“It was a great, enlightening trip. I had a fun time getting to know
people that I would have otherwise not gotten to know,” said senior
accounting major Fortenberry.
Students were given the opportunity to visit such famous establishments
as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve, United Nations, the
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Other landmarks included Times
Square, Wall Street, Central Park, China Town, the Financial District,
Little Italy, the Empire State Building, Ground Zero and the
Metropolitan Museum. Participants also enjoyed the performance of the
“Phantom of the Opera.”
When asked about her favorite place, senior Powell, PBL social/program
chair responded, “The best experience for me was when we visited the
United Nations and I sat in the General Assembly Room and absorbed the
surroundings. Being in a place where decisions about the welfare of a
country are ruled upon was awe-inspiring.”
Dr. Dee Larson, PBL advisor and assistant professor of marketing and
management, and Dr. Glenn Rhyne, TVA advisor and assistant professor of
economics, accompanied the students.
Rhyne said, “It was a great educational experience. It exposed them to
things that they’ve never seen before. The students took it seriously
and tried to learn as much as possible.”
Powell, Larson, and Jackie DiCicco, travel consultant and former
resident of New York, coordinated the trip.
