Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day to
be held at MUW
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women and Mississippi State
University will host the seventh annual Sonia Kovalevsky High School
Mathematics Day for high school girls and their teachers on Friday,
April 2.
The program is sponsored nationally by the Association for Women in
Mathematics. The event is organized in honor of Sonia Kovalevsky, a 19th
century mathematician and the first woman to receive a doctoral degree
in mathematics.
According to Dr. Jane Wenstrom, program organizer and professor of
mathematics at MUW, “The purpose of the event is to encourage and
inspire young women to continue their study of mathematics.”
This year the program will consist of workshops for students and
teachers as well as a problem-solving competition for the students. The
students will be introduced to areas of mathematics that are not part of
the standard high school curriculum.
The event is free and the first 200 registered participants will benefit
from a free lunch. The program will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Registered participants will be able to check in between 8 a.m. and 9
a.m. in the lobby of Parkinson Hall.
