MUW business students place at state conference
COLUMBUS, Miss.—Five Mississippi University for Women business students
took part in the annual Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership
Conference recently held in Tupelo. This year the conference hosted 31
colleges and universities with more than 300 registered students and
advisors.
The students competed in the Mississippi Competitive Events Series of
the National Awards Program for PBL. According to the PBL Chapter
Management Handbook, the mission of the program is to prepare students
for successful careers in business through support for curriculum
development and innovative assessment tools. The competitive events
series assesses students in the various knowledge, skills and abilities
that make up today’s business education curriculum.
This year MUW students were rewarded for their performance.
Ashley Nichols, marketing major from Suwannee, Ga., placed first in
marketing. Kristin Barner, management major from Greenwood, placed
fourth in management. Hazel Brooks, management major from Columbus,
placed fourth in public speaking. Meagan Vaughn, marketing major from
Brandon, placed fourth in marketing. Monique Jenkins, management major
from Amory, also participated.
Brooks said, “It was a great experience for me. I hope that in the
future years MUW will have a larger representation. Our students have
the capability of doing well in each area of the competition.”
Based on her outstanding performance, Nichols will be eligible to
compete in the national competition that will take place this summer in
Denver, Colo.
The MUW chapter was also recognized for contributions made to the March
of Dimes. During the fall 2003 semester, the chapter raised money for
the agency.
“I am very proud of our students. They did an excellent job. The fact
that four out of five students placed, shows that students from the W
are well equipped to succeed in the future,” said Dr. Dee Larson, PBL
advisor and assistant professor of marketing and management.
PBL is a national academic business leadership organization. It is the
college chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The
purpose of the MUW chapter is to provide opportunities for college
students to develop competencies for successful careers in business. As
members of this organization, students acquire business leadership
skills, learn about American business enterprise, attain job-related
skills, develop character and network with current and future business
professionals. In addition, PBL promotes a sense of civic and personal
responsibility, encourages scholarship and promotes school loyalty.
Dr. Anne Balazs, head of the Division of Business and Communication,
said, “We are enormously proud of our Phi Beta Lambda students and their
accomplishments. The consistent performance of our students in events
like these demonstrates the preparation, motivation and outstanding
abilities of our PBL members.”
