Scholarship fund established in memory of Dr. William E. Roberts

COLUMBUS, Miss. – A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Dr. William E. Roberts, who taught economics and political science at Mississippi University for Women 37 years.

Dr. Robert’s wife, Anne, and their three children, have established the Dr. William E. Roberts Scholarship Fund to benefit a deserving student who demonstrates financial need. Preference shall be given to a rising junior or senior student majoring in business and communication with a 3.5 GPA.

“So many people going to school today have to take out student loans. Education is the key to a successful life. If more people can further their education, the better our society will be. I’m sure he would have liked knowing that this scholarship will benefit a deserving student,” she said.

Dr. Roberts served as head of the Department of Economics and Political Science. He retired in 1983 with the title of professor emeritus. He was a veteran and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the India-Burma Theatre. After the war, he worked as an economist with the Department of Agriculture before beginning his teaching career at North Carolina State, where he taught for two years.

He was a graduate of Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, the University of Iowa, the University of Missouri and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Colorado. He also studied at Iowa State University, the Case Institute of Technology and Duke University.

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in spring 2005.
