memory of Dr. William E. Roberts
COLUMBUS, Miss. – A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Dr.
William E. Roberts, who taught economics and political science at
Mississippi University for Women 37 years.
Dr. Robert’s wife, Anne, and their three children, have established the
Dr. William E. Roberts Scholarship Fund to benefit a deserving student
who demonstrates financial need. Preference shall be given to a rising
junior or senior student majoring in business and communication with a
3.5 GPA.
“So many people going to school today have to take out student loans.
Education is the key to a successful life. If more people can further
their education, the better our society will be. I’m sure he would have
liked knowing that this scholarship will benefit a deserving student,”
she said.
Dr. Roberts served as head of the Department of Economics and Political
Science. He retired in 1983 with the title of professor emeritus. He was
a veteran and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the
India-Burma Theatre. After the war, he worked as an economist with the
Department of Agriculture before beginning his teaching career at North
Carolina State, where he taught for two years.
He was a graduate of Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, the University of
Iowa, the University of Missouri and received his Ph.D. in economics
from the University of Colorado. He also studied at Iowa State
University, the Case Institute of Technology and Duke University.
The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in spring 2005.
