(662) 329-7124MUW students learn about women in
Spanish film
CCOLUMBUS, Miss. – As National Women’s History Month approaches in March,
Mississippi University for Women students are learning about women in
Spanish film this semester.
Images of Women in Spanish Film: Breaking Away from the Past! examines
the changes that have occurred concerning the image of women in
contemporary Spanish cinema.
“Spanish cinema is truly experiencing a Golden Age with an ever
increasing number of excellent films over the years,” said Dr. T.
Michael Longton, professor of Spanish. “A major reason for this has been
the sharpening focus on Spanish women’s critical role in the development
of post-Franco Spain.”
Lectures and discussions are conducted in English, but all films are in
Spanish with English subtitles.
The course can be used as an elective for the women’s studies minor or
serve as an elective in Spanish for students who have completed FLS
251or higher (all written work is to be done in Spanish).
MUW added the women’s emphasis minor to its curriculum in the fall of
2002 to fulfill a part of its mission, which is to educate and promote
leadership among women.
“If one is interested in women’s issues, enjoys foreign films and is
willing to analyze and reflect upon what they watch both in class
discussions and in written reports, this is the course for them,”
Longton said.
