Garrett to be awarded MUW’s first Woman of the Year Award

By Jill D. O’Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women will award its first Woman of the Year Award to Ricki Rayner Garrett, a 1973 alumna and a member of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.

“Mrs. Garrett is a tireless champion for higher education in Mississippi and for MUW,” said Dr. Claudia A. Limbert, president of MUW. “She has brought knowledge and enthusiasm to her work in higher education that has benefited all of Mississippi’s citizens. Personally, knowing and working with her has been a blessing in my own life as president of MUW.”

An IHL Board member since 1992, Garrett earned a bachelor’s degree in English from MUW and a master’s degree in English from the University of Mississippi in 1974. She has taught on both the higher education and secondary levels.

In addition to this award, Garrett received MUW’s Medal of Excellence in 1995 and Alumni Achievement Award in 1993. She has served as president of the MUW Alumnae Association.

It is an honor to be the first recipient of this award,” Garrett said. “It is especially meaningful to be recognized by my own alma mater, a university known for its preparation of women leaders.”

Dr. Limbert established the award to recognize women who, through their work in business, private life or public service, serve as role models for current and future generations of MUW students.

The award will be presented annually at a woman’s leadership forum hosted by MUW. Recipients will be selected based on their personal record of achievement and their commitment to the life-changing benefits provided by a higher education.

MUW Woman of the Year recipients will be permanently honored with an engraved marker that will be placed in the Puckett Plaza on the MUW campus.

Garrett’s award will be presented at women’s leadership forum scheduled for March 25 in the Nissan Auditorium of Parkinson Hall. In addition to Garrett, Linda Burket, CFO of Eurocopter, will speak on the changing roles of women in corporate leadership.
