MUW to promote American Heart Association’s Red Dress Day

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Division of Health and Kinesiology at Mississippi University for Women will help raise awareness of heart disease among women by promoting the American Heart Association’s Red Dress Day on Thursday, Feb. 5.

According to the AHA, heart disease is the number one killer disease for women in the United States. Since1984, more women than men have suffered from heart disease, stroke or other types of cardiovascular disease.

Suggestions to prevent heart disease include learning effective ways to deal with stress, engaging in physical activity, as well as maintaining a diet high in fruits and vegetables, not smoking and getting medical checkups.

Both graduate and undergraduate health education students will provide information regarding the cause and will take donations that will go toward combating the rising statistics of women affected by heart disease. Individuals offering donations will receive red dress stickers or pins, depending on the donation.

MUW faculty, staff and students are asked to wear red tomorrow.

For more information regarding the event and donations, please contact Dr. Joyce Yates, associate professor of health and kinesiology, at 241-7669.
