MUW professor chosen to the board of National Association for Gifted Children

COLUMBUS, Miss.—Dr. Bob Seney, professor of gifted studies at  Mississippi University for Women, will be inducted into the board of directors of the National Association for Gifted Children. The ceremony will take place at the NAGC 50th anniversary conference in Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 12-16. According to Seney, the purpose of the organization is “to serve the needs of gifted children through research and practice. ” The association includes educators, parents and school administrators.

As a new member of the board, Seney is responsible for setting the  policy for the organization, overseeing the action in business of the organization, as well as serving on various committees. Seney also will serve as the liaison to the middle grades division, where he used to be the co-chair, but had to step down because of his election to the board. Seney is a mentor for the NAGC Professional Achievement Mentor Program.

At the conference, he will have the opportunity to meet for the first time with his mentee, Dr. Taylor Thompson, who used to teach at Mississippi Governor’s School.  “I am very pleased that I will be able to have an active leadership role in NAGC, and I am especially looking forward to this conference, because of the special 50th anniversary we have planned,” Seney said.  During the conference, Seney will give a presentation titled “What’s New in Young Adult Literature: 2003 Edition.” According to Seney, the purpose of the presentation is to create a rationale for using young adult literature for gifted students.  As part of the presentation, Seney will review current young adult novels that are especially appropriate for the gifted students.

Dr. Suzanne Bean, director of graduate studies and coordinator of the graduate program in education, will take part in the NAGC conference.  She is the invited speaker for the conference and will present a pre-conference workshop titled “Addressing The Needs of Underachieving Gifted Middle Schools Students.”
