Laura Young Memorial Scholarship established at MUW

By Jill D. O’Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Laura Young Memorial Scholarship has been established at Mississippi University for Women.

Young, who worked at MUW’s John Clayton Fant Memorial Library for 11 years, died May 12, 2002, from cancer. Her husband, Ned Young, has fully funded a $10,000 scholarship endowment that was started with memorial contributions following her death.

“I wanted to do this because of her deep love for the university,” Ned Young said. “I also wanted to help young people get an education that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to get.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who has a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrates financial need. Additional preference will be given to a student who has lost a family member to cancer.

“Fant Library was privileged to have Laura Young as a member of the library faculty for over 10 years,” said Pat Matthes, director of library services at MUW. “Laura loved the students and always went the extra mile to assist them with assignments and papers.

“I think this scholarship in her name fulfills a wish of hers to assist as many students as possible to succeed with their dreams. Hopefully, those students awarded the scholarship will share her love for life and her joy in helping others.”
