MUW's alumni cookbook to debut during Welty Weekend

By Jill D. O'Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- In conjunction with Mississippi University for Women's Welty Weekend, a release party for the alumni-sponsored cookbook "Southern Grace, Recipes and Remembrances" is set for Friday, Oct. 17 from 4-6 p.m. in the president's home.

Held in honor of beloved alumna Eudora Welty, Welty Weekend also will include the 15th annual Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium that will open on the evening of Oct. 16 in Poindexter Auditorium, the Andrea Godwin Overby Forum on Oct. 17 at 11:30 a.m. in the Hogarth Banquet Room and the Book and Author
Dinner on Oct. 17, 7 p.m., at Trotter Convention Center. On Saturday, Oct. 18, there will be a fine arts opening reception in Shattuck Hall at 1 p.m. Throughout the weekend, the gallery will feature paintings by Mary Lovelace O'Neal, a native of Jackson, who now resides in Berkeley, Calif.

"Southern Grace" is a hardback book that consists of approximately 200 recipes tested by Chef Sarah Labensky and the culinary students of MUW's Culinary Arts Institute. It also includes historical sidebars and campus photography.

Hors d'oeuvre recipes from the cookbook will be prepared by the Culinary Arts Institute for the release party.

"'Southern Grace' far exceeds my expectations of what I thought it would be or look like," said Jenny Katool, class of 1978 and chairman of the Cookbook Committee. "It is sure to be the latest tradition at The W.

"I have already prepared several of the recipes and they were met with rave reviews. My favorite part of the cookbook are the alums' food memories at The W.  They are very entertaining."

With more than 1,000 copies of the cookbook pre-sold, proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will go toward scholarships.

Copies will be available to purchase during the release party and throughout the weekend. The cookbook is $25.95 per copy, plus seven percent sales tax for Mississippi residents.

Cookbooks also can be ordered for an additional $4.50 for postage and handling for the first copy and $1 for each additional copy.
