Dunkelberg named MUW Humanities Teacher of the Year
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women Professor Kendall
Dunkelberg, an instructor at MUW for nine years, has been named MUW
Humanities Teacher of the Year. Annually the president and governor declare October as Arts and
Humanities Month. The Mississippi Humanities Council celebrates the
occasion by supporting humanities teacher awards to a single humanities
faculty at each state institution. The W elects its faculty member and the Mississippi Humanities Council
presents the award. Associate Professor Eric Daffron nominated Dunkelberg. Dr. Bridget Smith Pieschel, humanities division head said, “We are very
pleased Dr. Dunkelberg is this year’s recipient. He is a perfect example
of what a humanities professor should be, well rounded, a good teacher and
a good scholar. He is very active on campus and in the Columbus
community.” Dunkelberg said he was “thrilled and honored to receive this
recognition from his colleagues.” He will present a public lecture in
October based on current humanities interest or scholarly research. He
will be honored for his accomplishment during the Mississippi Humanities
Council’s Awards Banquet, tentatively scheduled for Feb.6, 2004. He has had three books published including “Landscapes and
Architectures,” “Hercules, Richelieu, and Nostradamus” and “Outside the
Lines: New Dutch and Flemish Writing.” Four of his poems were accepted for publication in the upcoming issue
of The Texas Review. These poems are “Alalia,” “Chokecherries,” “Glass
Bottles” and “Time Capsules.” His translation of the poem “Tuesday or
Wednesday” by the Belgian poet Miriam Van hee, was published in The
Literary Review 46.4 this summer. Dunkelberg was selected to serve as judge for the general category of
the Iowa Poetry Association contest. Serving as judge, he read more than
200 finalist submissions and ranked the top ten prizewinners and honorable
