COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Registered nurses with associate or diploma degrees
interested in advancing their careers can do so without leaving the
comfort of their homes.
Virtual learning is now available through Mississippi University for
Women's baccalaureate nursing program at the Tupelo campus.
"In a time where it's difficult to get off work and leave other
responsibilities, this option is a unique solution," said Kathy McShane,
program coordinator.
The Nursing Advanced Placement Option is a creative new program that
uses the latest technology and new delivery methods to allow registered
nurses with associate or diploma degrees to upgrade to a baccalaureate
level. The system consists of a multimodality instructional delivery to
convey the content via Internet access.
Mary Jo Kirkpatrick, interim division nursing head, said, "MUW is the
only RN/BSN Upgrade Option in the state that offers this type of
flexibility to help the needs of the working RN. MUW has always been
dedicated to the advancement of nursing practice."
The course is formatted to allow completion in a year with a total of
three semesters admitting in the summer or fall.
In addition to the new total distance program option, the modified
distance option will continue to be offered. In the total distance option,
all course requirements are communicated through computer-based
instruction and students are not required to attend class. The modified
distance option is a flexible setting that consists of the student
attending class one day every other week during the first semester and one
day every three weeks during the second and third semesters.
Learning modules include topics on leadership, research, community and
expanded roles in nursing.
