COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women will once again
welcome new and returning students to kick off the fall semester with
activities beginning with Move-In Day on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Dr. Gail Stephens, MUW vice president for student affairs, said,
“Welcome Week is designed for new students to have fun and make the
connections with returning students, faculty, staff and members of the
community that will make the experience and transition of coming to
college much more enjoyable.”
Students and their parents are invited to a picnic and to listen to
live music from the band FireWood of Huntsville, Ala. The performance,
which is free and open to the public, will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Shattuck
Lawn.
Activities will be hosted throughout the week and will take place up
until Thursday, Aug. 21.
On Thursday, Aug. 14, the Beta Kappa Tau Fraternity will have its third
annual Gingko Golf game on Bryan Green and Shattuck Lawn at 2 p.m.
Individuals are welcome to play a little pitch and putt golf on the Green.
The BKT's will host Snappafest Friday, Aug.15 on Shattuck Lawn. The
festivities will begin at 7 p.m. and will offer live music and barbecue.
Saturday, Aug.16 at 7 p.m., the traditional freshman serenade will
begin. Students will march from Hogarth to the president’s home to
serenade MUW President Claudia Limbert.
Monday, Aug.18 an inflatable mountain and water slide will be set up
for everyone to enjoy from noon to 4 p.m. A show by Comedy Central regular
performer and comedienne Elvira Kurt will follow in Rent Auditorium at 7
p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 19 the Interclub Cookout will be held at the gazebo and
will start at 5:30 p.m. This is a chance to join all nine college social
clubs for dinner and learn more about the social club system at MUW.
Welcome Week closes with Activities Fair on Shattuck Lawn Thursday,
Aug. 21. Student organizations will be set up for everyone to browse.
Local businesses also will be on hand.
