COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Mississippi University for Women is offering a deal
too good to be true--free tuition, free room and board, free field trips
plus a memorable college life experience.
The Pre-college Enrichment Program (PEP) at MUW will kick off Monday,
June 30.
"It's a one of a kind opportunity for high school students to earn real
college credits," said Dr. Brian Anderson, PEP director and assistant
professor of political science.
The annual program begins the second term of summer school and ends Aug
1. Students take a total of nine credits from 20 courses offered, which
include English composition, college algebra, speech communication,
psychology, philosophy and intermediate French all of which may be
transferable to potential W students.
Terri Heath, admissions director, said, "The program shows what college
life is all about. The students are just getting their feet wet."
For more than 30 years, PEP has maintained a record of success through
high recruitment levels largely owed to a responsive approach in and out
of the classroom.
Greenville native Brian Horton, who will be a W freshman in the fall,
said, "PEP gave me a sense of independence and prepared me for what
college life would be like." For students with similar objectives, Horton
said, "It's a fantastic experience and they should definitely go for it
[PEP]."
In addition to classroom learning, two field trips will be organized,
the first on Saturday, July 12. Students will visit the Alabama
Shakespeare Festival and watch "The two gentlemen of Verona." The second
trip will be to museums in Memphis.
Participants must have a 25 or above on the ACT or 1130 or above on the
SAT and a letter of recommendation from their high school guidance
counselor.
