MUW student to intern in Washington this summer

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Jada Doherty, a senior at Mississippi University for Women, will intern this summer in Washington, D.C., in the office of Sen. Thad Cochran.

“I was ecstatic to say the least,” Doherty said about learning that she had been chosen for the internship. “Out of all the applicants, I was chosen. It was a great honor and is one of the greatest achievements in my life thus far.”

The internship, which is during the months of June and July, consists of giving tours to visiting constituents and members of the state Legislature and performing daily tasks in the office.

She said she also hopes to take in the sights.

“I really look forward to visiting the Smithsonian and the White House,” Doherty said. “I would also like to visit New York and Arlington, Va., while I am there.”

An English and political science major from Waynesboro, she said one of her professors encouraged her to pursue the opportunity.

“My political science professor Dr. Brian Anderson spoke highly of internships in Washington, D.C., so I decided to try my hand at getting one for the experience, the education and the opportunity,” she said.

Following graduation from The W in May 2004, Doherty plans to study abroad for a year and then go to law school.
