MUW hosts Bring a Friend to Class Week
COLUMBUS, Miss -- Know an adult friend who is looking for an
opportunity beyond the excitement of the daily 9 to 5? Well, tell them to
look no more.
"In an effort to reach out to adult learners, Mississippi University
for Women will host Bring a Friend to Class Week April 21-25," said Dr.
Claudia Limbert, whose efforts as president have focused on educating
adult learners as well as traditional students.
An adult learner herself, Limbert was 35 and had four small children
before beginning college as an undergraduate and graduating from Bethel
College in Kansas with triple majors in English, history and education.
She went on to earn a doctorate in English literature and an M.A. in
creative writing from Boston University.
Flyers have been posted around campus and announcements have been made
in classrooms to promote the event.
Dr. Bridget Pieschel, head of the Division of Humanities, said, "I
think it is really a wonderful way for people considering coming to MUW to
see what our teaching is like. I think it is best if they sit down and ask
questions [in the classroom]. This has been a very common practice in our
division for years…I think students [should] feel comfortable enough to
bring people to hear what they are learning."
The weeklong event will feature more than 50 classes from the seven
academic divisions and Culinary Arts Institute.
If you do not have a friend currently attending The W and would like to
visit one or more of the classes, please contact the Office of Continuing
Education at (662) 329-7137. A list of the courses being offered also is
available through continuing education. |
