COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women’s culinary arts
program will welcome renowned food photographer Eric Futran to campus on
Friday, March 21.
Futran's exhibit, "How America Eats: Views of America's Food," will be
available Sunday, March 23 through Saturday, April 26 at the Culinary Arts
Institute in the Shattuck Hall Annex. Thirty to thirty five pieces will be
on display. In addition to the exhibit, Futran will teach a class on food
photography.
"The exhibit is about 20 years of photography of food, chefs,
restaurants and related subject matter," Futran said. "It's the ambience
of American food."
Chef Sarah Labensky, Culinary Arts Institute director, said, “I think
it’s great. It’s very impressive to have someone of his caliber teaching
the students…It’s the first time we’ve had an exhibit of any type of art
in the culinary building.”
Labensky said the culinary arts students would benefit greatly from the
exhibit and the class, which is sponsored by a grant from the Robert M.
Hearin Support Foundation. The program is not limited to culinary majors.
“Anyone interested in photography really should see his work,” Labensky
added, “Even if they are not interested in culinary.”
Several students will help with the exhibit.
Senior culinary arts major Nikkie Tice, said, “I’m actually really
excited that they got somebody famous to come. I’m glad they’ve done more
recruiting to get us better teachers here…I’m not sure [what I will
learn], but I’m willing to learn anything he teaches.”
Jeff Byrd, a senior culinary arts major with a minor in food art, said,
“I’m going into marketing with culinary so I plan to use the experience
for my future employment.”
The opening reception of the event will be Sunday, March 23 at 2 p.m.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
