MUW to host Medical Music Therapy Day
COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Mississippi University for Women will host Medical
Music Therapy Day on Saturday, March 1.
Music therapists from Birmingham and New York will be giving sessions
on medical applications of music therapy. Sessions will include topics on
acute care, children and music therapy, assessment in a medical setting
and songwriting in the hospital setting.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to spread the word about music therapy
at The W, as well as give people from different fields an idea of how
music therapy works in a medical setting," said Kristen Cole, MUW music
therapy director.
The conference is open to all interested students and professionals.
The cost of the conference is $15 for students and $25 for professionals.
Seating is limited and registration will be accepted until the day of the
conference.
A benefit concert will be held that evening at Poindexter Hall from
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., featuring Sarah Perry, singer/songwriter and music
therapist. She will perform songs from her CD titled "Life's Imprint:
Expressions of Youth." Music therapy patients with cancer, leukemia and
other health-related illnesses wrote all of the songs. The concert also
will feature student musicians and faculty from MUW and Mississippi State
University.
The concert is free and open to the public. Proceeds from the CD sale
and concert will go to the Children's Miracle Network.
All of the Medical Music Therapy Day events are sponsored by the MUW
Division of Fine and Performing Arts, Mu Theta Chi: MT Club and Sprint of
Columbus.
