MUW adds new business concentration
COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Mississippi University for Women’s Division of
Business and Communication has added a concentration in information
resources management to its business administration degree that bridges
the gap between business strategy and information technology, making it
the only curriculum in the state designed in this manner.
Denise Sibley, an instructor in business, was responsible for designing
the new curriculum that will give students a solid foundation in
information technology using a knowledge management approach.
“As the 21st century unfolds, organizations find themselves operating
in a new economic environment,” Sibley said. “The rapid growth of
globalization, the advancements in technology and the rise of the
knowledge worker have forced businesses to rethink their management
strategies.
“In today’s knowledge economy, businesses must learn how to leverage
their knowledge resources to achieve a competitive advantage. Most
businesses find themselves drowning in a sea of information, yet they lack
the expertise to turn this information into something meaningful.”
Sibley, who is completing her doctorate at the University of Southern
Mississippi in international development, designed the curriculum around
the Information Resources Management Association model and her research in
knowledge management.
Prior to joining the MUW faculty, Sibley worked as an independent
consultant and corporate trainer. “Being in the field has given me a
firsthand account of what businesses are looking for in graduates,” she
said.
