Conference at MUW focuses on leadership for high school students

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- High school juniors and seniors who want to discover their true leadership potential should pack their bags and head to the Hearin Leadership Conference at Mississippi University for Women.

The conference, which will be held Jan. 24-26, will attract students from Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas.

During the conference high school seniors will have an opportunity to interview for one of four Hearin Leadership Scholarships that are based primarily upon demonstrated school and/or community leadership. Awards may be renewable depending upon a recipient's participation in The W's Hearin Leadership Program and performance at The W. Students who do not receive one of the Hearin Leadership Scholarships will be considered for a W-Leader Scholarship.

Current MUW students, who are participating in the Hearin Leadership Program, will facilitate the entire conference. Other Hearin Leadership Program activities include nationally acclaimed speakers, co-sponsored student life events and leadership workshops and retreats.

To be eligible to attend the conference students must have an overall 2.5 high school GPA and be recommended through their high school guidance counselor. The conference is free and openings are still available.

Through a generous grant from the Robert M. Hearin Foundation, The W established the Hearin Leadership Program. The four-year program mixes coursework with community service, organizational involvement, self-development and leadership events.

For more information about the conference or Hearin Leadership Program, call the Office of Admissions toll-free at 1-877-462-8439, ext. 7106, or (662) 329-7106.
