MUW professor wins ASCAP award COLUMBUS, Miss.-- The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers recently recognized Mississippi University for Women professor of music Richard Montalto as a 2002-2003 award winner. Individuals are chosen for the cash award based upon the unique prestige value of each writer's catalog of original compositions and recent performances. Dr. Montalto has won this award for the past 19 years. However, "It is not an automatic award," said Montalto. "You have to maintain consistency in performance and recognition." The panelists who chose Montalto for this honor include: David Bowden, musical director and conductor; Peter Filichia, drama critic for the Star Ledger; Carolyn Jennings, professor of music at St. Olaf College; Peter Keepnews, a freelance journalist specializing in jazz and popular culture; Michael Morgan, music director of the Oakland-East Bay Symphony Orchestra; Melinda Nerwman, West Coast bureau chief of Billboard; Pat Prescott, radio personality; H. Robert Reynolds, professor emeritus at the University of Michigan; and Greg Sandow, music educator, composer and classical musical critic for the Wall Street Journal. Montalto has taught at MUW since 1988. |
