Studies Major
The Bachelor
of Science degree in Family Studies may be pursued by
students interested in careers that involve working with
children/families or in Teacher Licensure in Family and
Consumer Sciences. The Family Studies program focuses on
dynamics within families, the social context of the family,
as well as the development of individuals within the family
unit. Also, family structures, member roles, and family
interactions are examined. This major is intended to prepare
students interested in working with family life education in
community service agencies. A minimum grade of “C” in each
course required by the major and a minimum GPAof 2.5 in the
major are prerequisites for FS 499 or student teaching. The
minimum hours required for a BS degree in Family Studies
(General) is 129 except when FS 205 is not available and is
substituted by PSY 302. The minimum requirement then becomes
128. The minimum number of hours required for teacher
certification in Family and Consumer Sciences is 132 except
when FS 205 is substituted by PSY 302. The minimum then
becomes 131. These hours include the major courses listed
below, university core requirements, and at least 6
additional hours of science and/or mathematics.
