The record retention schedule (RRS) at Mississippi University for Women provides a standard for maintaining necessary records as required by applicable state and federal law, and to the extent necessary for operational purposes. The retention periods listed on this schedule should be considered the minimum time for which a paper record must be held.

The term "records" is a unit of information made or received by an employee while transacting official University business. All records (created, received, or maintained) by departments during their operations belong to the University and are retained according to the record retention schedule.

This schedule is not all-inclusive. It is a guide to assist departments when making record disposal decisions. Reviews of the changes in federal and state laws pertaining to record retention is the responsibility of individual departments.

If a federal or state statute or regulation specifies a longer retention period for any records, the statue or regulation overrides this schedule.
