TITLE: Health Center

PURPOSE: To set guidelines for the MUW Health Center

OPERATING DETAILS:

1. All full-time or part-time students at MUW are eligible to use the student health services. Students are not covered by the student health service program during vacations or academic recesses. No fee is charged for routine visits to the Health Center. There is nominal charge for medications, supplies and complete physical exams such as those required by the Division of Nursing.

2. Student health insurance may be obtained through a commercial carrier. Applications and brochures explaining available coverage may be obtained in the Health Center and the Office of the Comptroller.

3. The Center, located on the first floor of Taylor hall, is administered by the Head of the Division of Nursing. It is staffed by a Family Nurse Clinician. The Family Nurse Clinician is a master's prepared registered nurse who in her expanded role is licensed to diagnose and treat many common conditions. The protocol for treatment is developed in conjunction with a collaborating physician, who is available at all times for consultation and/or referral.

Standard operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when classes are in session.

Routine care is provided the entire time that the Health Center is open. This allows students to receive care at times other than their scheduled class periods.

The Health Center provides the following services:

-Allergy injections, immunizations, lab tests, physical examinations -Ambulatory care for minor illness or injury -counseling regarding health concerns (i.e. specific nutritional needs, weight loss, stress management, family planning, etc.) -Crutches, slings, and nonprescription drugs -Health related programs for the University community

4. When the Health Center is closed Emergicare, the emergency room at Golden Triangle Regional Medical Center, Primary Care Unit at GTRMC or Family Medical Center may be used by students requiring care. Students are expected to provide their own transportation except in cases of extreme emergency or hardship when a Security officer or ambulance will be called. The student is responsible for all expenses incurred.

5. Each prospective student is provided with a health information sheet which must be completed before registration and returned to the Health Center office.

6. Personal concerns discussed with the Health Center Staff are kept in strict confidence. The nurse-patient relationship is strictly maintained. All consultations and treatments are confidential. All records are kept confidential and will not be released without the written permission of the student.
