TITLE: Pre-Medical Advisory Committee
AUTHOR: Faculty Division of Science and Mathematics
EFFECTIVE: January, 1983
PURPOSE: To define the function of the Pre-Medical Advisory Committee
REVIEWER: Head, Division of Science and Mathematics
OPERATING DETAILS:
1. The Pre-Medical Advisory Committee serves to provide qualified academic counseling to those students preparing for a career in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science. Each entering student, so interested, is assigned to the appropriate advisor member of the committee for the duration of their stay at MUW.
2. The Pre-Medical Advisory Committee also functions to submit formal recommendations for MUW students who make application to medical, dental or veterinary science schools. Each member of the committee evaluates each student, and the chairman combines the individual evaluations into a single committee recommendation which is submitted on the form provided by the particular professional school. The final committee recommendation is available to all members of the committee.
3. The committee meets together about twice a year to discuss students interested in medical schools, pre-medical requirements, scores on pre-professional exams, and the status of former students for whom recommendations have been written.
4. The committee meets once a year with students who are, or might be, interested in a medical profession. Students are informed of procedures for making application and methods of evaluating applicants. Members of the committee have a chance to share information and ideas with these students.
5. The Committee consists of five members from the Division of Science and Mathematics.
6. The University holds a membership in the National and Regional (Southern) Association of Health Professional Advisors.
