Operating Details
1. The campus radio station, WMUW, is administered by the Division of Communication. The station is governed by a board composed of the division head, director of broadcasting, WMUW faculty advisor, and the student station manager and program director. The board will set policy, select and appoint the student manager and program director, and review station operations. Other station staff appointments will be made by the faculty advisor and student station manager and program director.
2. WMUWs budget is part of the budget designated for Radio and TV. The budget is administered by the director of broadcasting, who signs purchase orders.
3. Scholarships are available for qualified students, normally those holding appointments to leadership positions with the station: station manager, program director, music director, public affairs director, news director, traffic manager, production manager, and promotions director. The names of students to receive scholarships will be submitted to the Director of Financial Aid.
4. To be eligible for a MUW scholarship, a person normally should be a full-time student at MUW (15 semester hours minimum), majoring in broadcasting or journalism, and appointed to one of the leadership positions (see paragraph #3). To maintain a scholarship, a student must continue to perform all duties and responsibilities in a satisfactory manner. The scholarship holder must have a 2.0 GPA minimum, or demonstrate that a GPA is improving satisfactorily (see paragraph #5). In the event a scholarship is cancelled due to any of the preceding reasons, the amount of the award will be prorated to cover the actual days the scholarship was in force before cancellation. Scholarships may be renewed but are not automatically renewable. They are awarded one semester at a time, subject to the above criteria.
5. WMUW radio is part of the academic programs in broadcasting and broadcast journalism. As such, a primary purpose of the radio station is to help educate students in the basic principles of radio station operations.
Therefore, broadcasting students will have first priority for all jobs with WMUW. Non-majors and non-MUW students may apply for jobs with WMUW and, if qualified, may be eligible for volunteer (non-pay) work. All MUW student workers must maintain an overall minimum GPA of 2.0. A student with a GPA less than 2.0 may be able to work for the station, on probation, if demonstrating that the GPA is satisfactorily improving. If the GPA does not improve satisfactorily but remains the same or drops, the student will not be eligible to work for WMUW until the GPA reaches 2.0. This requirement does not preclude broadcasting majors from meeting COM 401/402 practicum requirements (see paragraph #7).
6. WMUW is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission and the Communications Act of 1934 as amended. As such, it is subject to all applicable rules and regulations. All operators must possess FCC license. Restricted Radiotelephone Operations Permit or other approved FCC license. WMUW is also subject to state laws and university policies and will strive to adhere to all such applicable regulations and policies.
7. All broadcasting students are required to complete COM 401/402, Broadcast Practicum, normally during the junior and senior years. These courses include practical work experience with WMUW for a total of three semester hours credit. All persons who work for WMUW are expected to perform their duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. Failure to do so will be grounds for dismissal.. Students enrolled in COM 401/402 will receive grades based on testing and/or how well they perform their duties and assignments. Normally, dismissal would result in a failing grade.
