TITLE: Faculty Development Monies

AUTHOR: Faculty Council

EFFECTIVE:

PURPOSE: To define the use of funds provided for the faculty development program.

REVIEWER: Vice President for Academic Affairs

OPERATING DETAILS:

1. The faculty development fund has three separate money accounts designated for faculty development use. The accounts are (a) General fund, (b) MUW Foundation Endowment, and Magnolia Quasi-Endowment.

2. The General Fund has the following conditions:

a. Faculty development funds obtained from the MUW State allocation in the amount of $5,000 annually will be used to support this function.

b. Funds budgeted for the faculty development program may be used to assist individual faculty with expenses incurred in developing new courses; in curriculum revision; in presenting a paper to a scholarly or professional group; in holding an exhibition; in presenting a recital or performance or in serving as an officer of a professional or scholarly group. Examples of matters these funds may support include travel, manuscript preparation, shipping works of art to exhibition sites, etc.

c. A second priority level for using these funds includes sending faculty members to workshops, short courses or seminars with the understanding that the faculty members would upon their return share their studies with students, faculty members, or the public in on-campus seminars. Faculty members also may use these funds to attend workshops such as those dealing with grantsmanship or improving teaching effectiveness that would result in a general benefit to the university. Such usage does not mandate a seminar presentation.

3. The MUW Foundation Endowment has the following conditions:

a. These funds are designated interest money from a permanent $20,000 endowment from private donations to the MUW Foundation. The fund allows for three awards: one of $1,000 and two for $500.

b. Funds are to be used to strengthen classroom teaching.

c. Applications for the awards must be full time faculty members and must be under contract to MUW for at least one full year following the awarding of the money.

d. Applicants must provide an indepth description of the project (beneficiaries, purpose, time frame for development, and how it will strengthen classroom teaching). Applicants must submit all estimated expenditures for the project and must identify if profits will be accrued from the project.

e. Application must be received and monies awarded in the Spring semester.

f. There are no restrictions on the number of times an applicant may apply nor are there any restrictions on whether the project is a new or continuing one.

g. The money does not have to be awarded each year if there are no proposals which meet the established guidelines. Unused money in addition to further contributions to faculty development remains in the interest bearing account.

4. The Magnolia Quasi-Endowment has the following conditions:

a. Money for the Magnolia Fund comes from interest on the he $20,000 earnest money paid by those who intended to purchase Magnolia Dormitory. The amount has been set aside to endow Faculty Development Activity. The interest earned as well as unused funds will be held in an interest bearing account for future faculty development activity.

b. The Magnolia Fund is to be used for faculty development on a Divisional scale. The money may be used by an entire division or by disciplines within a division for projects such as guest lecturers, weekend planning retreats, divisional attendance of off-campus seminars, etc.

c. Three academic divisions will be eligible to use the money each year. Divisions will rotate in alphabetical order. Should a division not use the money, the next division on the list will be able to apply for the unused funds. Divisions will remain in rotational order regardless of whether they use the money at their designated time.

d. The rotation order is as follows: Business and Economic; Communications; Education and Home Economics; Fine and Performing Arts; Health, Physical Education and Recreation: Humanities; Library; Nursing; and Science and Math.

e. Eligible divisions are encouraged to make application during the Spring semester for the following year's use of the funds if possible. The latest possible application date is October 1 of the year in which the money is to be used. Any portion of the available money not requested by October 1 will be made available to the next division in the rotation system.

f. Application for the money will be made on form MM (attached) and submitted to the chairman of Faculty Council. The Faculty Development Committee, appointed by the chairman of the Faculty Council, will review applications and will notify the division and the Vice President for Academic Affairs regarding approval of request.

g. Projects must be other than those covered by the General Fund or Faculty Research Funds.

5. A Faculty Development Committee from the Faculty Council will be appointed by the Faculty Council chairperson. The Committee will describe procedures for applying for available funds for each separate money account and for evaluating applications. These procedures must be approved by the President upon recommendation of the Academic Council and the Vice President for Academic Affairs. When a proposal is approved by the Committee, it will be forwarded to the full Council and then to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, who maintains budgetary control.
