PS# 1308

Issue # 1

TITLE: Remuneration for Substitute Faculty

AUTHOR: Vice President for Academic Affairs

EFFECTIVE: July, 1983

PURPOSE: To establish criteria for payment of substitute faculty

REVIEWER: Vice President for Academic Affairs

OPERATING DETAILS:

1. Mississippi University for Women recognizes the need to provide some systematic procedures to meet staff needs which arise from unexpected loss of faculty after a semester has begun.

2. Division Heads are responsible for reporting faculty absences which have the potential for prolonged loss, and for making arrangements to cover classes using divisional faculty in cases of short-term absence.

3. A search for substitute staffing will be conducted by the division head in conjunction with the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

4. The university will bear the cost for substitute faculty. The approved budget for overloads/part-time faculty will be used to defray payment to substitutes.

5. The faculty member who substitutes for one calendar month or more within a given semester becomes the teacher of record for the course for the remainder of the semester even though the ill faculty member may recover later in the semester. This action is based upon the assumption that the affected students have undergone one prolonged change of instructor and should not after a month's time be forced to undergo another such change. The returning faculty member will be assigned appropriate alternative duties by the division head in conjunction with the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

6. Payment for substitute faculty, who become teachers of record, will be a fractional proportion of the regular overload salary based upon the actual number of class periods taught.
