Who is eligible to participate in CHAMPS?
To be eligible for CHAMPS, teachers must:

  • Be a K - 8th grade teacher of mathematics
  • Commit to completing all components of the program
  • Be employed at a school that has made a commitment to participate in the CHAMPS Project
  • Agree to participate in all required activities

Who else may also be eligible to participate in CHAMPS?
The following teachers may be eligible to participate based upon a review of each individual application:

  • Special Education Teachers
  • Teachers not currently teaching mathematics
  • Teachers not currently teaching in a targeted district

How are teachers selected for CHAMPS?
Up to 75 teachers will be selected based on:

  • Meeting eligibility requirements
  • Interest in professional growth and development
  • Quality of their application materials
  • Application submission date

What is required of each CHAMPS participant?
The CHAMPS Project requires all participants to remain in the program for a full year. Participants must commit to ALL of the following:

  • Attend the two-week summer institute (July 10 - 21, 2017) on the campus of Mississippi University for Women at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. (Dormitory rooms will be reserved for teachers traveling 100+ miles.)
  • Paricipate in 3 follow-up events throughout the school year
  • Complete up to 4 online courses focused on effectively implementing the College and Career Readiness Standards and using formative assessments
  • Participate in web-based professional learning communities
  • Conduct pre-approved, anonymous pre and post testing with students using a specially developed assessment instrument from the CHAMPS program
  • Maintain monthly email, phone, or face-to-face contact with faculty and project staff

What will I receive for participating in the CHAMPS Project?
Participating in CHAMPS will provide participants with an increased understanding of College and Career Readiness content, teaching strategies, and formative assessment.  The following incentives will also be provided:

  • Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
  • Hands-on training, instructional materials, supplies
  • Stipends issued upon completion of each phase of the program
  • College and Career Readiness Standards Certificate after completing the required professional learning online courses.  These courses are reflective and last six weeks.
  • "Highly Qualified" endorsement in middle school mathematics if the teacher currently holds a Mississippi teaching License in one of the following areas: K-8, 1-9, or K-12 SPED.

What are the application requirements?
Applications will not be considered until ALL of the following have been submitted.
Teacher applications include:

  • General teacher information forms
  • Principal Agreement form
  • Copy of current teaching license
  • One page statement of your professional interests, involvements, accomplishments, and goals
