2017 CHAMPS Conference

Registration is now open for the 2017 CHAMPS Conference

More than ever, teachers are being faced with pressures to perform in the classroom, even as the ground shifts under their feet and distractions loom large.  Teachers are rising to meet these challenges by expanding their pedagogical toolboxes to include integration of new methods, materials and technologies. 

In its 13th year, Creating High Achievement in Mathematics and Problem Solving (CHAMPS) at Mississippi University for Women is not your typical teacher workshop.  This intensive, 10-month professional development program endeavors to shift the paradigm of math instruction from a conceptual, teacher-centered, rote methods approach to one of captivating, applied, student-centered practice in alignment with Common Core State Standards.  From data coaching, to Common Core, to specific lessons focused on tackling challenging mathematics concepts, CHAMPS’ expert instructors take time to train teachers in proven techniques that students (and teachers) will love.

The 2017 CHAMPS Conference will focus on feeding the professional appetites of math educators who are dedicated to their craft; constantly striving to be better in all aspects of the classroom.  Join us to spiral into a hopeful and meaningful conversation about how we can better entice students to appreciate mathematics, making them more motivated, capable and productive. 


Who Should Attend

Conference is open to all educators.


Continuing Education Units (CEUS)

0.8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered to teachers with full attendance to the conference.  CEUs will be offered through the Professional Learning Office at The W.  The fee for CEUs is not included in the registration fee.



 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m (lunch included).  More details to come.



Ed Zaccaro has taught students of all ages and abilities since graduating from Oberlin College in 1974. He holds an Iowa teaching certificate with K-12 endorsement in Gifted Education and a Masters degree in Gifted Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Ed is a popular presenter at math, gifted and homeschool education conferences around the country and has approached gifted education as a parent, teacher, and school board member. His students will testify to his ability to make math fun and challenging for them as well as his unique sense of humor which comes through in his classes and workshops. Ed is the author of 10 books for mathematically gifted children.

Sessions will be conducted by CHAMPS Instructors: Kimberly Dodd, Debbie Fancher, Lindy Hopkins, Lucy McKellar, and Lauren Zarandona.  CHAMPS Participants will also present sessions. 



Teachers traveling to the Columbus area will find a host of lodging options that will fit their budget and accommodation needs.  Please visit The Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau website to learn more about hotels, restaurants, shopping, and other travel needs.

CHAMPS participants will be lodged at Plymouth Bluff, furnished by the program.  Please contact the CHAMPS Program Manager to secure a (double occupancy) room.


Conference Location

Mississippi University for Women’s campus is located in the heart of Columbus, Mississippi.  Conference sessions will take place in rooms of various halls according to space and training needs.  Please use the map below in preparing for arrival.  Maps, schedules, and other conference essentials will be provided upon registration the morning of February 11, 2017.
