Music by Women

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Department of Music at Mississippi University for Women presents the inaugural Music by Women Festival March 3-4 in historic Poindexter Hall on The W’s campus.

The festival will be comprised of 70-plus papers, lecture recitals and new music, all relating to the subject of music composed by women. The public can attend the sessions by registering for the festival. All festival concerts are free and open to the public and do not require a registration. The festival begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 3 and closes at the conclusion of the last concert that will take place Saturday, March 4 at 8 p.m.

Festival presenters include more than 150 professors, independent musicians and students from all over the United States and abroad. The aforementioned presenters come from such institutions as University of Oklahoma, University of Miami, Hofstra University, M.I.T., University of North Carolina, James Madison University, Ball State University, Central Michigan University, Eastman School of Music, University of Delaware, Florida State University, University of Massachusetts and many others. The Music by Women Festival will showcase the musical contributions of women composers from an array of musical eras. This Festival aims to bring together musicians to shine light on the works and contributions of a group of composers whose works may not be included in the classical music performance canon.
