Mississippi Hall of Master Teachers & Institute for New Teachers
The Mississippi Hall of Master Teachers began in the hearts and minds of those who know and respect great teachers. Established on the campus of Mississippi University for Women in 1991, MHMT recognizes and honors outstanding educators for their consistent excellence and long-term dedication to teaching in grades K-12.
The Mississippi Hall of Master Teachers now has 120 members. The portraits of the inductees hang in the first floor hallway of the The W's Education and Human Sciences Building.
Categories for Nominations
Nominees must have 15 years of full-time classroom teaching, including at least seven years in Mississippi schools, K-12. Nominees may be current teachers or retirees and should be exemplary teachers.
Elementary Grades K-6
Middle or Junior High Grades 7 & 8
Senior High Grades 9-12
Emeritus (retired) Elementary or Secondary
Nominations are initially evaluated by a Mississippi Selection Committee composed of three classroom teachers, two administrators, a representative parent, and a representative of the business/ professional community. Nominees are evaluated on the basis of the evidence of their teaching ability, professional activities, educational leadership, teaching philosophy, contributions to course and curriculum development, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.
After the Mississippi Selection Committee review, a group of finalists are identified and these applications are evaluated by a national committee to determine which teachers will be inducted into MHMT each year.
The celebration luncheon and induction ceremony are held on the Mississippi University for Women campus during the first week of December each year. For the past 10 years, the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation has sponsored the event.
New Teacher Institute
The Institute was initiated in 1993 to bring beginning teachers into communication with each other and with experienced teachers who could advise, encourage, and nurture. The participants attend sessions on a variety of topics such as classroom management, curriculum and assessment, and motivational teaching strategies, often led by MHMT members.
