Module 1 - Orientation to Fant Library-Reference
The Reference section contains both print sources and electronic access to a wide variety of reference materials. These reference items
include:
- Subject Databases
- Almanacs
- Encyclopedias
- Abstract Indexes
- Annual Reports
- Dictionaries
- Business Resources
- Genealogical Resources
Microfiche and microfilm reader/printers are also available near the reference area. Copies made on these machines cost $.10 per page.
A librarian is available for your reference questions during all hours of operation. For help with equipment or locating materials, please ask at the reference or circulation desk. The Reference section is located on the east side of the first floor. Reference materials cannot be checked out.
Orientation to Fant Library-Ready Reference
When you need the definition of a word, the name of a member of Congress, the top 10 movies from last year, statistical
information, information about countries, a quote or any quick type reference question, an area in the library has been organized to help
provide this type of information-Ready Reference. Some available resources are:

Orientation to Fant Library: Genealogy
The collection of material that pertains to genealogy includes titles pertaining to South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Pennsylvania located in the Reference (F) call number area. Military indexes, passenger lists, and county histories are included. United States Census microfilm dates to 1790, with 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1890 representing eastern and southern states. An electronic database that is helpful with genealogy is linked below.

Orientation to Fant Library: Special Collections
Special Collections is located in the right rear corner of J.C. Fant Memorial Library. This room houses historical materials of MUW (Meh Lady, Spectator, university bulletins, etc.), first editions by George Eliot and other rare books, as well as selected files of Columbus, Lowdnes County, and Mississippi. All material located here is non-circulating. The Special Collection Room is kept locked. Hours are: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday - Friday. Inquire at the Circulation Desk.
