No matter what topic you are researching, you should include periodical literature in your search. Periodicals can be defined as materials that are published at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly, daily, etc.)
Periodical articles are important because they contain current information, which is especially important in fields such as science, business, psychology, and technology. Also, subjects too new or too specialized to be covered by books are often covered by magazines, journals, and newspapers.
Periodical Indexes in PrintThe Accounting and Tax Index provides citations to articles about virtually every aspect of accounting and taxation. Related subjects include financial management, compensation, consulting, and the financial-services industry. More than 1,000 publications are scanned for relevant citations. The Applied Science and Technology Index provides citations to articles on the following subjects: acoustics, aeronautics and space science, automatic control, ceramics and glass, chemistry, computers and data processing, construction industry, energy resources and research, food and food industry, geology, machinery, mathematics, meteorology, metallurgy, oceanography, optical and neural computing, petroleum and gas, physics, plastics and rubber, robotics, safety and fire prevention, telecommunications, textile industry and transportation. The Art Index is an index to domestic and foreign publications in the areas of archaeology, architecture, art history, city planning, crafts, motion pictures, graphic arts, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, museology, photography, and related fields. Bibliography of the History of Art covers current literature of European Art from late Antiquity to the present and American Art from the European discoveries to the present. Bibliography Index is a guide to biographical material appearing in periodicals and books. Material covered includes obituaries, collections of letters, diaries, memoirs, juvenile literature, book reviews, and bibliographies. All biographies are American unless otherwise noted. Book Review Digest provides citations to and excerpts of reviews of current juvenile and adult fiction and nonfiction in the English language. The following types of books are excluded: government publications, textbooks, and technical books in the sciences and law. Book Review Index is a master key providing access to reviews of thousands of books, periodicals, and book-on-tape. Representing a wide range of popular, academic, and professional interests, BRI cites from more than 600 publications. The Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry indexes hundreds of anthologies by author, title, subject, first lines and last lines. The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature provides authorative coverage of the literature in both these areas from more than 800 journals. Primary coverage is given to the following: nursing, cardiopulmonary technology, dental hygiene, emergency services, medical/laboratory technology, medical assistant, medical records, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, optometry, physical therapy and rehabilitation, physicians' assistants, podiatry, radiologic therapy, social service in health care, speech-language pathology and audiology and surgical technology. Current Index to Journals in Education is a monthly guide to current periodical literature in education, covering articles published in approximately 980 major educational and education-related journals. Essay and General Literature Index is an author subject index to essays published in collections with particular emphasis on materials in the humanities and social sciences. Entries cover philosophy, religion, social and political science, economics, law, education, linguistics, science, the various arts, literature and history. Humanities Index is a cumulative index to English language periodicals. Subjects fields include: archaeology and classical studies, area studies, folklore, history, language and literature, performing arts, philosophy, religion and theology, and related subjects. Index Medicus is the National Library of Medicine's monthly bibliography of literature of biomedicine. The annual Cumulated Index Medicus comprises the contents of the 12 monthly issues. About 3093 journal titles are indexed. International Nursing Index is the print counterpart to the nursing content in MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's premier journal database. Journal articles indexed in INI come from three sources: nursing articles in Index Medicus, additional nursing journals selected for inclusion in the nursing subset of MEDLINE, and any MEDLINE or HEALTHSTAR articles indexed with selected nursing terminology. About 300 journal titles are indexed. The Marriage and Family Index covers all leading marriage and family journals. The most frequently cited categories for the past several years were: Physical health services and families, marriage and family therapy, family roles and gender roles, parent-child relationships, employment and families, later years and aging, family law, family stress and coping, sexual attitudes and behaviors, and mental services and families. The MLA International Bibliography provides a classified listing and subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literature, folklore, and linguistics. The bibliography includes: British and Irish, Commonwealth, English Caribbean, and American Literatures; European, Asian, African, and Latin American Literatures; Linguistics; General Literature and Related Topics; and Folklore. The Physical Education Index is a subject index to domestic and foreign periodicals which are published in English. Comprehensive coverage is given to dance, health, physical education, physical therapy, recreation, sports, and sports medicine. In addition, coverage is given to such specific subject areas as: biomechanics-kinesiology, coaching, facilities, measurement-evaluation, motor learning, perception, physical fitness, research, sport psychology, sport sociology, teaching methods, training, and all sports activities. Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature is an author subject index to selected general interest periodicals. In addition there is a listing of book reviews following the main body of the index. Social Sciences Index is a cumulative index to English language periodicals in the fields of: anthropology, area studies, community health and medical care, criminal justice and criminology, economics, family studies, geography, gerontology, international relations, law, minority studies, planning and public administration, policy sciences, political science, psychiatry, psychology, social work and public welfare, sociology, urban studies, women's studies and related subjects. World Painting Index is a tool for locating reproductions of painting in books and catalogs by artists from around the world. It indexes 1167 books and catalogs published between 1940 and 1975. It can be searched by artists and title. |
