Where is the card catalogue?
We have moved from a print card catalogue to one that is accessible
from the internet. To access the card catalogue from the
Internet, go to www.muw.edu/library and
select the Electronic Resources link.
Are copy machines available for student use?
The Library has two copy machines available: one is on the first floor
behind the stairwell and the second in on the second floor to the right
of the stairs. Costs are $.10 per page, and both machines will
accept $1.00 and $5.00 bills.
Can anyone use the library's facilities?
Although our primary purpose is to serve the students, faculty and
staff of
Mississippi University for Women, we take pride in providing resources
to the community at large. Everyone is welcome to use our facilities,
although some restrictions will apply. We require all minors who are
not MUW or MSMS students to be accompanied by at least one parent or
guardian when visiting the library, unless they have a drivers license.
Is there a designated quiet area in the library?
We ask that patrons act in a courteous manner while in the library.
This includes keeping noise to a minimum. However, the first floor is a
high traffic area, with study groups meeting, faculty and staff
working, and library tours being conducted. Because many people
need a quiet place for studying, the second floor has been designated
as a quiet area. Please inform a librarian or circulation staff member
if you are having difficulty studying due to noise. The librarian on
duty will work with the patrons and security personnel to ensure that
J.C. Fant Library is as quiet as possible, while allowing necessary
conversation and the noise of computers and printers to continue.
Can I bring a cell phone into the library?
Cell phones are increasingly becoming a disturbance in the library. We
ask all patrons to place their ringer on vibrate mode, and to conduct
their conversations outside the library.
How can I send or receive a fax?
Fax services are available for students, faculty and staff. If you want
to receive a fax at the library, the number is (662) 329-7348. To send
a fax, inquire at the circulation desk and someone will assist you.
What programs are available on the library
computers?
- Access 2000
- Excell 2000
- PowerPoint 2000
- Word 2000
- Netscape
- Internet Explorer
- Wordperfect 10
- Microsoft Photo Editor
- Acrobat Reader 5
Can I install my programs on a
library computer?
The only programs permitted on library computers are programs that the
library has purchased licenses for, or has received permission to use.
No other programs are allowed.
Can I play computer games, use instant messaging or
chat using library computers?
Please note that library computers are to be used for
university-related work only. We ask all patrons to refrain from
playing computer games. Please limit your time using chat clients or
instant messaging to 30 minutes per day. The viewing of sexually
explicit material is strictly prohibited, and we reserve the right to
ask MUW Security to intervene during any violation of these rules. Also
note that as the library network is connected to the internet, security
can not be guaranteed. If this is an issue, we suggest that you do not
enter information of a private nature on any public access library
computer. Security of sensitive personal information is the users
responsibility.
Can I access the library's electronic databases
off-campus?
As of this writing, all of our databases are available via off-campus
dial-up if MUW is your service provider. If you are using another
service provider, please contact us at 662-329-7332 for access
instructions.
Can I use my laptop in the library?
Because laptops can pose a security hazard, it is not feasible to allow
their use in the library at this time. An exception to this is if the
laptop does not have a network card installed. We are working with
Network Operations to develop a strategy to allow laptops to be used
anywhere within the library.
