Admissions to Culinary Arts

Admission to the B.S. degree program in culinary arts is the same
as general admission to the University.
Types of Admission There are various types of admission
status for students accepted at MUW. The various types of admission are freshman/regular admission, transfer
admission, non-traditional, and international student.
Requirements for freshman admission are:
The school course requirements set forth below are applicable to students graduating from high school
beginning with the spring of 1996 and are subject to change in accordance with the Board of Trustees
of State Institutions of Higher Learning. * English -- 4 units/Courses must require substantial communication
skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
* Mathematics -- 3 units/Algebra I, Algebra
II, and Geometry. A fourth course in higher level mathematics is highly recommended.
* Science
-- 3 units/Biology, advanced biology, chemistry, advanced chemistry, physics, and advanced physics or
any other science course with comparable rigor and content. One Carnegie Unit from a physical science
course with content at an introductory level may be used. Two of the courses must be laboratory-based.
* Social Science -- 3 units/U.S. History (1 unit), world history (1 unit with substantial geography
component), government (1/2 unit), and economics (1/2 unit).
* Advanced Electives -- 2 units/Foreign
Language, world geography, 4th year laboratory-based science, or 4th year mathematics. One unit must
be in foreign language or world geography.
* Computer Applications -- 1/2 unit/The course should
include use of application packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets. The course may be through
course work or through a statement of competency from the high school.
* 8th Grade/Algebra I or
1st year foreign language taken in the 8th grade will be accepted for admission provided course content
is the same as the high school.
Regular admission will be granted to the following: * all students
completing the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) with a minimum of a 3.2 high school grade point average
(GPA) on the CPC. * all students completing the CPC with a minimum of 2.5 high school GPA on the CPC
and a score of at least 16 points or higher on the ACT (760 on the SAT) or rank in the upper 50% of your
class and score at least 16 or higher on the ACT (760 on the SAT). * all students completing the CPC
with (a) a minimum of 2.00 high school GPA on the CPC and (b) a score of 18 or higher on the ACT composite(850
SAT). * All students satisfying the NCAA standards for student-athletes who are "full qualifiers"
uner Division I guidelines.
Transfer admission will be granted to the following: Any students
who fail to meet the regular admission requirements or successfully complete the Summer Developmental
Program must attend an accredited institution of higher learning other than those under the governance
of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (Mississippi) and attain a C average
(2.0 QPA on a 4.0 scale) in the following 24 semester credit hours: * 6 semester hours of English
Composition * 3 semester hours of College Algebra or above * 6 semester hours of a laboratory
science * 9 semester hours of transferable electives
Transfer students are accepted on the
basis of the rating of the college from which they desire to transfer, the type of program pursued and
the quality of work completed at the college level. The transcript must certify that at the next registration
period the student's grades are acceptable to re-enter the college from which the student is transferring.
Due to academic performance at another college or university, a student may be admitted to MUW on academic
probation as determined by an evaluation of transfer credits. Transcripts from each college attended
should be sent to the Admissions office when work has been completed prior to entering MUW. All students
must earn at MUW at least 25% of the semester hours required for a specific program to qualify for an
undergraduate degree.
Graduates of accredited junior/community colleges who transfer to MUW will
be required to earn at least 50% of the semester hours required for a specific degree at a senior institution
(including 25% of the smester hours at MUW) before becoming eligible for any degree, regardless of the
number of hours accepted in transfer from the junior/community college.
Non-traditional student
admission occurs under the following circumstances: Non-traditional students (those without previous
college attendance who are 21 years of age or older and who do not meet regular admission requirements
as an entering freshman or transfer student) may be admitted as a non-degree-seeking student and register
for up to 12 semester hours credit during a semester. A change in classification from non-degree-seeking
to degree-seeking may be achieved by: * meeting regular admission standards (including submission
of the requird ACT (SAT) score; OR * completing a minimum of 12 semester hours at MUW with an overall
C (2.0 QPA) average.
International student admission will be granted under the following conditions:
* completion of International Application for Admission form * copies of transcripts, diplomas, and
certificates of all previous academic work (must be certified and translated into English) * Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 525 or higher * ACT or SAT scores; and * official
letter of financial backing (International students without previous records at colleges or universities
within the U.S. must meet the requirements outlined herein for admission as a freshman or transfer student).
