Associate Professor of Culinary Arts Director, MUW Culinary
Arts Institute
Chef Sarah is Founding Director of the Culinary Arts Institute at Mississippi University
for Women. She teaches cooking and management courses, and administers the university's unique four-year
baccalaureate degree program. Prior to joining the MUW faculty, she was a Professor of Culinary Arts
at Scottsdale (Arizona) Community College. Before entering the classroom, Chef Sarah spent many years
as a working pastry cook and caterer. Sarah is co-author of the best-selling culinary textbook,
On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals (3rd ed. Prentice Hall, 2002), which was nominated for
an IACP/ Julia Child Cookbook award. She also co-authored The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cooking Techniques
and Science, (Alpha Books, 2003), and Webster's New World Dictionary of Culinary Arts (2nd ed. Prentice
Hall, 2000), as well as many magazine articles. In her former life, Sarah was a practicing attorney,
with a J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University. She also holds a B.S. degree cum laude in Public Administration
from Murray (Kentucky) State University and a Culinary Certificate from Scottsdale (Arizona) Community
College. She has been repeatedly included in Marquis' Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America and
Who's Who of American Women. Chef Sarah is active in numerous professional organizations and in currently
Vice-President/President-Elect of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. She is also
a member of The American Culinary Federation, The James Beard Foundation and Les Dames d'Escoffier.
