Broaden Your Horizons.
The Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy provides a broad liberal arts education for all students. Our courses emphasize reading, writing, and critical thinking, as well as discovering and using information. Students who major in English, Spanish or Women’s Studies learn to analyze cultural texts, conduct scholarly research, and communicate effectively, while gaining an understanding of how their major connects to the world at large. Through our majors and teacher certification in English and Spanish, the concentration in Creative Writing, and certificate programs in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Applied and Professional Ethics, students have opportunities to prepare for a wide variety of professions. Minors in English, Foreign Language, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Women's Studies enrich the curriculum.

In addition, the department has been involved with opportunities for study abroad such as recent group trips to Ireland, Scotland, Mexico, and Spain.

Painter Hall Plaque

The Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy is located in Painter Academic Hall. Constructed in 1922, Painter is on the National Register of Historic Places and is listed as a Mississippi Landmark.  The hallowed halls of Painter are the very same Pulitzer-Prize wining author and alumna Eudora Welty walked as a student. The historic building is also home our sister humanities department History, Political Sciences, and Geography.
