Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy

Students in ClassThe Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy provides a broad liberal arts education for all students. Our courses and programs of study emphasize reading, writing, and critical thinking, as well as discovering and using information.

Students who major in English, Spanish or women’s studies learn to analyze written material with accuracy and understanding, write clearly and correctly about a subject, perform scholarly research in a major, and gain an understanding of their major as it connects to the world at large. English and Spanish majors may earn teaching certification. English majors may also earn a concentration in creative writing. Any major may complete the courses for a certificate in teaching English as a second language (TESL) or a certificate in Applied and Professional Ethics.  Students can choose from departmental minors in English, creative writing, foreign languages, philosophy, Spanish religious studies and women’s studies.

The department sponsors several active student organizations, including Sigma Tau Delta National English Honorary, the Midnight Writers Club, the Foreign Culture Club, and Sigma Delta Pi National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

Students write, edit and publish an annual departmental literary magazine, The Dilettanti. Department majors have many opportunities to study abroad for language or literary enhancement.  In the past, majors have studied English in London and Edinburgh and Spanish in Alicante, Spain and Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Painter HallThe Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy is located in Painter Academic Hall. Constructed in 1922, Painter is on the National Register of Historic Places and is listed as a Mississippi Landmark.  The hallowed halls of Painter are the very same Pulitzer-Prize wining author and alumna Eudora Welty walked as a student. The historic building is also home our sister humanities department History, Political Sciences, and Geography.
