The Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies may be pursued by students interested in careers in Community Service or in Teacher Licensure in Family and Consumer Sciences. The Family Studies program provides a comprehensive view of the family life cycle through a focus on family needs and on human development throughout the life span. A minimum grade of "C" in all courses required by the major and an overall QPA of 2.5 in the major are prerequisites for FS 499 or student teaching. Total hours required for a BS degree with this major are 129.
Students must complete 120 volunteer hours in Human Services or educational settings before beginning FS 499 in addition to the coursework.
This curriculum combines coursework from specialized subject areas: family and human development; health and nutrition; consumerism and resource management. Graduates serve as family and consumer sciences professionals in business and industry, in human services, and with Cooperative Extension. The graduate is also licensed to teach family and consumer science in middle and junior high schools, secondary schools, and adult programs.
Students who plan to minor in family and consumer science will be assigned an advisor to develop an individual program. All courses must be approved by an advisor in the Education and Human Sciences Unit of the Division. A grade of "C" or higher is required in all courses in the minor.
