1. How do I get into the Honors College?

To be eligible for admission, freshman students must present at least a 24 on the ACT or the equivalent on the SAT; junior transfer students must present at least a 3.7 GPA on 60 transferable hours. Eligible students must then apply. The easiest way to apply is to attend Scholars’ Day (freshmen) or McDevitt Day (junior transfers). Eligible students who do not attend one of those days must submit applications. Otherwise, see the Director of the Honors College for an application. Students who enter MUW as freshmen without the eligibility requirements may be admitted later based on MUW GPA. See the Honors Director or the bulletin for more information.

2. Does the Honors College have any scholarships?

The Honors College does not award scholarships directly but does assist the university in identifying top scholars for scholarships tied directly to the Honors College. Those scholarships include the Centennial Scholarship and the Honors Scholarship. Both scholarships include generous stipends for the honors study abroad program.

3. Do I have to participate in honors if I have a 24+ ACT or if I get a scholarship?

No. Students with a 24+ ACT are eligible to participate but are not required unless they are recipients of Centennial and Honors Scholarships.

4. Do I have to study abroad if I am in honors, and do only honors students study abroad?

All MUW students in good standing who meet program requirements may study abroad. Only honors students in the Residential Honors Program must study abroad during the summer after their second year at MUW.

5. May I live in the Honors Residence Hall? Must honors students live in the Honors Residence Hall?

Because the Honors Residence Hall is small, only participants in the Residential Honors Program live there, and they are required to do so. Other honors students live elsewhere on campus. Occasionally, spots will open up in the Honors Residence Hall for students not participating in the full Residential Honors Program.

6. What is the Residential Honors Program, and must I participate in it to be in honors?

The Residential Honors Program is a two-year living-learning community that involves common classes, a residence hall experience, and a study abroad program. Centennial and Honors Scholars are automatic members of the program. A few others may be invited to participate if interested by putting their names on a waiting list. All other students participate in the regular honors program (curriculum only).

7. I’m a junior transfer student, but my friend is a freshman. Do we have different requirements?

Yes. Students who enter the Honors College prior to the junior year must complete four semesters of the honors forum, three honors general education courses from a menu of eight, a year of a foreign language, two special topics seminars, and the two-semester Independent Study. Junior transfer students complete only the foreign language, the seminar, and the independent study requirements.

8. I’m a freshman with some prior college credit. What are my choices for honors general education courses?

Students who enter the Honors College prior to the junior year select three from the following eight honors general education courses: EN 101 (honors), BSB 101 and 102 (honors) with labs, HIS 101 and 102 (honors), any one math at MA 130 and above, and PSP 213 and 214.

9. Do I need a year of foreign language to graduate with honors?

Not exactly. To graduate with honors, you need the equivalent of a year of the same foreign language. Thus, you may take the CLEP test, go directly into Spanish or French II, or transfer in course work taken elsewhere. All you need to do is to earn credit on your transcript for at least the equivalent of the second semester of the same foreign language at university level.

10. Are there honors foreign language courses?

No. Simply take the regular sections. That is why you need only the equivalent of a year of the same foreign language to fulfill the honors requirement.

11. May I transfer in my AP English or English CLEP test? Will it count as honors English?

You may transfer in AP and CLEP courses. See the bulletin for more information. However, those courses will typically not give you honors credit. Only honors sections of English Composition, general biology, and History of Civilization taken at MUW will earn you honors credit in the Honors College. The only exception is math (See the next question). Thus, if you transfer in AP credit or prior college credit, you need to strategize about which courses you can still take on the menu of eight honors general education courses.

12. Is there an honors math course?

No. However, you may take any one math course at MA 130 or higher to satisfy part of the requirement of three honors general education courses. That rule also applies to Calculus-Based Physics I and II. Thus, students could take MA 130 (or higher) and Calculus-Based Physics I and II to fulfill the entire honors general education requirement. Moreover, it is possible to transfer to MUW (through college credit taken elsewhere or through AP or CLEP) the equivalent of MA 130 or higher and receive honors credit for one of the three honors general education courses.

13. Must I complete the entire honors curriculum in order to graduate with honors?

Yes, departmental honors will be awarded only to students who successfully complete the entire curriculum.

14. If I have a Centennial or Honors Scholarship, must I participate in honors?

Yes, recipients of those scholarships must participate in honors or forfeit their scholarships. See your scholarship contract for more details.

15. May I take more than the required number of courses?

Yes, absolutely. Many honors students take extra honors general education courses or extra seminars.

16. What will be the topic of my honors project?

You should select a topic in your major (or occasionally minor) that will allow you to conduct original research. See the honors faculty committee member in your department or college as well as the honors website for more details about types of projects.

17. May I start the honors project before my senior year?

Yes, though most students complete their projects in their senior year, some begin some time in the junior year. You should not attempt the Independent Study prior to the junior year.

18. Does the honors college have a GPA requirement, and what happens if my grades are low?

Honors students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0. If students fall under a 3.0, they will be placed on honors probation for a semester. If after their next semester of attendance at MUW, their GPA does not reach a 3.0 or better, they will be suspended from the Honors College.

19. Why is MUW Honors College called the Ina E. Gordy Honors College?

Miss Gordy graduated from MUW in 1929 and lived to be over 100. Already a generous financial supporter of MUW, she endowed the Honors College in fall of 2005.
