Honors Residence Hall Spring 2008 Colloquium

Faculty: Dr. Tom Velek
  Dr. Beverly Joyce
  Dr. Eric Daffron

Mentors: Leigh Pourciau
  Sarah Dietrich

Intern: Randi Harrell

Description: The Honors Residence Hall is not only a place to live but also a place to learn and to grow socially and intellectually. Throughout the week, residents will have the opportunity to interact with each other and with their mentors and faculty. However, the Thursday night Colloquium provides a formal structure for such encounters.

Learning Outcomes: Honors students will demonstrate engagement with issues that expose them to diversity in the world and to interdisciplinary ways of thinking, that challenge their critical thinking skills, and that promote learning outside the traditional classroom.

Students will exhibit scholarly traits not only in their academic performance and scholarship but also in their comradery with other student and faculty scholars, their leadership roles, and their mutual social and intellectual support.

Requirements: The Colloquium is the center piece of the Honors Residence Hall experience and is, moreover, a requirement of the Residential Honors Program, which is, furthermore, a requirement for many residents’ scholarships. To ensure active attendance at, and participation in, the Colloquium, the mentors will keep attendance and report it to the Director of the Honors College. Students should not schedule any activities, social or academic, during the scheduled times of the Colloquium. If the absence is absolutely necessary, students may miss the colloquium one time per semester.

Expectations: The Honors College has high expectations of residents. In addition to excessive colloquium absences, failure to attend classes regularly, poor performance in classes, academic or honors probation, and behavioral problems may result in expulsion from the residence hall and, if applicable, a revision of scholarship terms.

Schedule: The following schedule is subject to revision. Most events will take place between 6 and 8 PM in the Honors Residence Hall unless otherwise noted or communicated.
