CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Pilates (pronounced Puh-Lah-Tees) is a system of exercise designed to achieve optimal strength and flexibility. The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises. It strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind, and creates a more streamlined shape.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The emphasis in Pilates focuses on developing the deep stabilizing muscles of the torso and strengthening core abdominal and back muscles. The non-impact resistance eliminates stress on joints, realigns muscle imbalances and focuses on maintaining neutral pelvic and spinal alignment. The Pilates exercises will be performed on a mat.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. To improve core stability and body balance.
  2. To enhance performance in sports and daily activities.
  3. To increase flexibility, agility, and mobility.
  4. To flatten and define abdominals.
  5. To have better posture.
  6. To improve circulation.
  7. To build stronger, longer, and leaner muscles.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Attendance: All absences are unexcused. Your grade will be determined by the number of absences, as follows:

0-3 = A 4-6 = B 7-8 = C 9-10 = D Over 10 = F

If you are late to class after the roll is called, you will be counted absent.

PARTICIPATION: You will be expected to workout during each class. Proper clothing is required in order to workout in a class. Shoes are optional. A workout is defined as exercising your body at your appropriate fitness level to meet your fitness goals. Active participation will be 50% of your final grade. Attendance will count 50% of your grade.

TEACHING METHODS: Methods utilized in this class are mostly active participation with a few days used for fitness testing.

  1. It is the responsibility of the student who has professionally diagnosed disabilities to notify the instructor so that necessary and appropriate modifications can be made to meet any special learning / physical needs.
  2. Audit students must attend 70% of the classes, or 9 absences.
  3. The last day to add or register for a class, change from audit to credit, or change from
  4. Grade to P/F is January 14, 2003.

  5. The last day to drop without receiving a grade of WP or WF, or to change from
  6. credit to audit is January 28, 2003.

  7. The last day to drop a class with a grade is February 25, 2003.

6. The last day to withdraw from the University is April 15, 2003.
