HKC 110 WATER AEROBICS
CREDIT: 1 Semester Hour
CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Water Aerobics is a non-impact exercise class designed to challenge the student to be physically active in the water. Activities will include a warm-up, an aerobic session, resistance training, and a cool down. Students should feel comfortable in the water (shallow and deep water activities).

NATURE OF COURSE CONTENT:
The purpose of this course is to learn various water fitness activities containing both aerobic and resistance workouts. The students will use this knowledge to improve their present fitness level and to motivate themselves to continue to lead a physically active life.
GOALS/OUTCOMES:
Upon completing this course, the student should be able to:
1. show progress toward goals.
2. calculate his/her target heart rate.
3. calculate her/his heart rate while exercising.
4. determine whether goals have been met.
CONTENT OUTLINE:
Week one - establish target heart rate, set personal goals, and begin conditioning
Weeks two through four - learn fitness routines and continue conditioning
Week five - Assess progress toward goals and present fitness routines
REQUIREMENTS OF COURSE:
1. Students are expected to attend and fully participate in all classes. This is a laboratory class and quality of activity is assessed daily.
2. Students are responsible for acquisition of material covered on days when absent. Prior arrangements must be made with the instructor if absence from a test is unavoidable.
3. Students will design and lead a water fitness routine.
4. All students are expected to wear appropriate swim wear.
METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Student performance will be evaluated as follows:
A rubric will be used to assess participation.
A rubric will be used to assess the fitness routines.

270 - 300 = A
