COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is designed to prepare the student to monitor safely, administer properly, and interpret accurately the results of different forms of exercise tests. The course will also prepare the student to prescribe exercise safely and effectively for apparently healthy individuals based on the results of different exercise tests.
OBJECTIVES: Upon the completion of HK 403, Graded Exercise Testing and Prescription, the student will:
A. Health Appraisal, Risk Assessment, and Safety of Exercise
1 . identify and understand the risk and benefits of exercise and exercise testing.
2. demonstrate knowledge of exercise policies and safety precautions.
B. Clinical Exercise Testing
1. understand the purposes of clinical exercise testing.
2. administer properly different forms of clinical exercise tests.
3. understand the interpretation of clinical exercise test data
C. Basic Electrocardiography
1. describe accurately the conduction system of the heart.
2. properly prepare an individual for EKG monitoring at rest and during maximal exercise testing.
3. accurately measure heart rate for an EKG rhythm strip.
4. interpret sinus, atrial, and junctional rhythms
5. interpret heart blocks
6. interpret ventricular rhythms
7. list the indications for terminating an exercise test.
D. Guidelines for GXT Administration
1 . understand clinical indications and uses for exercise testing.
2. fist the components of a typical medical evaluation prior to an exercise test and know normal values for these components.
3. identify absolute and relative contraindications to exercise testing.
4. describe the categories of individuals who should receive medical clearance prior to exercise testing.
5. demonstrate the ability to obtain appropriate medical history, informed consent and other pertinent information prior to exercise testing.
6. demonstrate the ability to instruct participants in the use of equipment and test procedures.
7. administer properly a post-test briefing.
1. Name the drugs commonly encountered during exercise testing and describe how they may affect the ECG, heart rate, or blood pressure during exercise.
4. Describe abnormal; chronotropic and inotropic response to exercise testing.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Written Exams (2) 200 pts
Case Studies (2) 50 pts*
Stress Test Observation 50 pts**
Final Exam (1) 100 pts.
TOTAL 400 PTS
*Stress test observations will be at BMH-GT Radiology
